Statement from Missouri National Education Association President Charles E. Smith on the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education

“Thousands of Missouri teachers, parents, and students lifted their voice to stand against the Trump-DeVos anti-public-education agenda. Today’s vote is not the end – it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to advocate for every Missouri student and stand against the dismantling of our local schools.

We commit that as educators our voice will challenge any government official who places special interests over the best interests of Missouri children. We will watch Betsy DeVos and our elected representatives and are ready to challenge any policy that harms students or threatens a quality education for every Missouri child.”

The 35,000-member Missouri NEA represents teachers, education support professionals, college faculty, retired teachers and students studying to be teachers in school districts and on college campuses throughout the state. It is the Missouri affiliate of the 3 million-member NEA.
